Paris Fashion Week coming to a close, and though there were plenty of inspiring moments, it's Dries Van Noten - it's always Dries motherfrackin' Van Noten - that leaves me wanting to be better. There's something about crafting the Dries aesthetic that feels like learning a language - the pairing of the pieces is all perfect subject verb agreement. If you get it right, you're going home with the cute foreigner in the cafe, but if you get it wrong, you've just called someone's mother a dog. Dries is a master at combing what seem like discordant moments of color, pattern, and texture, with a menswear inspired fit, into a perfectly coherent look. Like any good linguistic student, I struggle through it, muddled tongue and all. I pull patterned pieces and sequins and sometimes it comes out okay. So here's to Dries, for - every now and then - pushing me out of my native minimalist tongue and towards maximalist fluency.
